This Sunday I've been to my first TedxAthens talkathon. And it was awesome.
I've already been to a couple of TEDxAcademy events but this was different. Bigger. Bolder.
Trolls beyond the gates were deriding actual Tedx participants because a livestream of the talks was readily available. The main thing about TedxAthens though was not the speeches.
It was never the speeches.
It'll never be just about the speeches.
It's about the meetings and the networking.
Ridiculing others for bothering to attend TedxAthens and not just sitting through a livestream is like bragging about your internet porn collection instead of getting off your ass, picking up someone and actually getting laid. And that by the way seems to be the problem with the Greek situation: we'll be bitching non-stop even in the face of The Second Coming.
I really enjoyed many of the speeches but I had a blast in the in-betweens, the people I've met and spoken with as well as by tweeting about the event like there was no tomorrow.
First part was going a bit stale at some point but then came the awesome Rory Sutherland and all was right again in the world. Same goes for Paris Mexis, Charis Tsevis, Joe Trippi, George Kourounis, Dr. Nikolaos Mavridis, Sebastian Lindstrom, Matt Webb - they all had much to say and have already actually achieved more than many would dare to even dream.
There were some parts that ought to have been done otherwise and some that could have been omitted altogether. But let's face it: it's easy to just sit back and critisize others but one ought to ask oneself: what are my - the critic's - achivements in life? The crew that made TedxAthens possible tried and succeded in making something in a country that excels in doing nothing.
That alone is in itself quite commendable.
TedxAthens 2011 did have its peaks and valleys to be sure as well as the aforementioned army of trolls that made Tedx known through their constant bitching. And that is always a good thing.
So - as always: thank the lord for great breasts, tremendous achievements and trolling.
These are the things that make the world go round.
